The paper provides a method of image segmentation of binary and gray scale images. For binary images, the method captures not only the connected components but also the holes. For gray scale images, there are two kinds of “connected components” – dark regions surrounded by lighter areas or light regions surrounded by darker areas.
The paper isn't as interesting as the reviews it initially received. To summarize, they claimed that the topology graph is a tree, it has been done! Quite stupid. I started working on the paper. First I added 5-6 mentions of the fact that “this graph isn’t a tree”. Then I added a section called "The topology graph is not a tree", some with bold face. Finally I renamed the paper as well. It turned into: A graph, non-tree representation of the topology of a gray scale image. At that point I just kept rewriting. The end result was a separate, much longer paper.
