The example below shows that the difference replacement for the smooth gradient does not produce the desired result: the line integral over 1x1 square of the gradient of a function isn't zero. i.e. there is no path independence. Compare to discrete exterior calculus. The same point can be made with the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus but it's not as convincing.
