This image analysis example came from a biology researcher: "karyotyping of chromosomes: 1-rearrange the chromosomes; 2-detect the length of each chromosome's arm."

Pixcavator easily produced these contours but, as you can see, the chromosomes aren't quite separated. Best you can do here is to compute the average size of the chromosome, if you already know how many you've got... To separate them, the best bet is watershed segmentation.
