The main source of blurring comes from averaging of the optical information.

Specifically:

  • The camera may be out of focus, then the incoming light appear smeared.
  • In astronomical imaging incoming light in the telescope may be slightly bent by turbulence in the atmosphere.
  • There is motion blur.
