This image analysis example is about analyzing (counting and measuring) solar flares as seen in the telescope. For some background, see this presentation: Multifractal And Topological Analysis Multifractal Of Solar Magnetic Field Complexity by I.S. Knyazeva and D.A. Milkov.

The idea of topological analysis is to find the Betti numbers of these images.

However, most of the value of the Betti numbers would come from noise - those little dots. So instead I located the actual flare (two large white spots) in the image. I had to blur the image first. You can get the same results with Pixcavator if you set the sliders at 220 and 30 and push Unmark dark (see Filtering data).
